Family
Early in his childhood, Amar, one of the main characters in A Place For Us, looks out the window of his living room and points out to his mother that "when it rains harder, the drops join together more quickly" (73) . The natural phenomena that Amar points out in this scene holds a lesson that I often forget.
Author Fatima Mirza does an excellent job at reminding us that the bond we have with our family members are some of the most important connections we form in our lives and that in times of great turmoil, it's our families that step up to aid us and we should seek their help. Its our siblings, our parents, our friends, and our colleagues who help get us through hard times.
In the novel, we see that when Amar gets into a fight at school or Hadia is alone at her own birthday party or Amira is insulted by her own family, it is their friends and siblings that come to their side. Even when they get into fights with each other, they quickly reconcile their differences and become friends again. Whether its a best friend or a family member, its important that we are grateful for those we love and even in a storm, we stick by their side.
Wow. First of all the quote that you used is beautiful, and as you said we tend to forget this important lesson. It's easy to point out how much you dislike someone, but it's hard to remember how they supported you in difficult times. I also love the structure of your post, the way it flows from the quote to your analysis, and then back to examples from the novel makes the post easy to understand. Wow!
ReplyDeleteI really love the way you structured this post with the quote and everything else. Your message is great as well, and its especially relevant today. We all need to remind those closest to us how much they mean to us, and we all as a society need to come closer.
ReplyDeleteI remember reading that line and being confused. However, Mirza never fails to make things symbolic and I love your interpretation of it! I think it's really interesting how Amar makes this observation as he often feels outcast from his family.
ReplyDeleteWow, that is seriously an inspirational quote! It tells us about how even if you have fights or differences with your family, eventually you will reconcile and support each other in tough times. This also reminds me of another, equally inspirational quote from Legends of Tomorrow: "Maybe that's what family is. The people you don't mind being annoyed by."
ReplyDeleteThis is some very inspirational stuff that is universally applicable to anyone. I like how this was more the small details of the characters lifestyle and choices that speak to who she is. I also like how you very explicitly state the types of people you should reconcile with quickly if you ever fight.
